British Broadcasting Corporation "Ethiopia: Meles in talks with US congress delegation" Addis Ababa: Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told US congress members that his government was committed to ensure food security and combat HIV/AIDS. Meles met and held talks later on Friday 29 August with
the US congress members led by Barbara Lee, member of the international
relations committee with the congress. He said, the government was carrying out various food security measures by sustainably addressing the drought and reducing poverty. Prime Minister Meles commended the US government for the sizable emergency relief assistance amounting to about 500m US dollar provided to help the Ethiopian government avert the looming humanitarian disaster following the drought, a senior foreign ministry official who attended the meeting said. The US government has also been supporting the food security endeavours in Ethiopia with a financial assistance amounting to 4m US dollars, he said. Congresswoman Barbara Lee after meeting with Prime Minister Meles told journalists that she learned of ongoing commitments in Ethiopia to reduce poverty and combat HIV/AIDS. Barbara Lee said she would exert efforts in soliciting additional support from the congress by explaining the food security and HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in Ethiopia. The congress members had paid a two-day visit to the South Ethiopia Peoples State southern Ethiopia and looked at HIV/AIDS intervention activities in the state. |
